Storytelling communication technique with Agile Scrum

I recently attended an excellent workshop about business storytelling by expert communicator Colin James. Colin demonstrated how to use this technique to better “engage, influence and drive action, fast” in business contexts. His presentation got me wondering as to how and when storytelling could be incorporated into agile, Scrum events.

Storytelling is a technique that uses real-life stories to communicate and connect with employees, customers, suppliers, partners, and anyone else involved within an organisation. This technique is primarily used to engage, inspire and influence, with the aim to change the audiences’ feelings, thinking and actions. Rather than using just facts and data when communicating, storytelling allows the communicator to engage the audience in real-life situations, sharing personal experiences, building trust, and getting a message across in an engaging way. In situations when you want to communicate a new idea, overcome resistance, encourage, improve morale or even entertain, storytelling is an excellent tool. For example, I recently was in a situation where the team morale was low, due to the fact that some members of the team expressed concern about the lack of possibilities to innovate within a project.
