How agile teams can implement sustainable development goals of agenda 2030!

The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, adopted by all United Nations in 2015, provides a shared blueprint for peace and prosperity for people and the planet, now and into the future. This article introduces a framework which can be adopted by product owners, scrum masters and software development teams, so that we can play our part in the building, maintaining and securing a sustainable future. It’s not too late to do our part!

Where to start?

As with any strategic initiative, I would firstly suggest investigating whether your company already has a sustainable development goal defined in their business strategy. There is no point in going ahead and re-creating the wheel, or implementing another sustainability goal in your department, team or product area that doesn’t align with the company’s strategic objective.

Framework

Created by the United Nations and developed for the banking industry, the 6 principles of Responsible Banking provide a framework which can be adapted and modified for use at a tactical level within an agile development team, irrespective of the industry you are involved in. Let’s now look at how each of these principles can be aligned to an agile team.
